PRESS STATEMENT
5:00 pm, August 18, 2005
Contact: Robert Barq 228-594-0208
Governor Barbour’s statement
today appears be a step in the right direction. The 12
Miles South Coalition believes that all drilling or testing
activity within the area twelve miles south of the islands
should be halted immediately. We are convinced that a credible
impact study of drilling within twelve miles south of the
islands and in the Sound will strongly show our concerns
to be well founded, and that there will unacceptable impacts
associated with testing and drilling.
The bottom line is that we still expect the Governor to
support the prohibition of any testing or drilling unless
it is twelve miles south of the islands. There must be a
statutory prohibition against these activities and until
that is in place, we will continue to oppose any seismic
testing in this area.
As former President Reagan would say, “Trust
but verify.”
PRESS STATEMENT

The 12 Miles South Coalition wishes we could share
Senator Lott’s confidence. But we can only base our
position on what Gov. Barbour has done in secret, which directly
contradicts what he has said publicly. Governor Barbour appears
committed to his drilling plan.
We totally agree with Senator Lott that this has been “funny
deal”. It has been “funny” from the time
it started until now. The public has been misled and kept
in the dark just like Senator Lott. But, we are not going
to sit back and hope that this will work out for the people
of the coast…quite the contrary. We again urge every
citizen of the Coast that agrees with us to bring your family
and friends to the forum this Sunday.
We again invite Senator Lott to attend the forum. He would
then learn that SB 2853 allows drilling from Pascagoula to
Petit Bois Island and from Waveland to Cat Island.
For the record, we don’t oppose drilling, and all
the people on the Coast are asking is that Governor Barbour
use the authority of the state to keep it twelve miles south
of the islands. We do oppose further seismic testing until
there is a prohibition against drilling inside of the twelve
mile limit.
